NO HABRA MAS PROBLEMA ELECTRICA EN INGLATERRA POR LA TELEVISION

No More Strain on Grid from TV Audience
LONDON (UPI) -- Engineers with the British National Grid have found a symptom of the fragmented TV audience -- the end of huge surges of electrical use after popular shows. The 1990 World Cup semifinal between England and Germany set an all-time record of 2,800 megawatts as more than 1 million people turned on their electric kettles at the same time after the game, The Scotsman reports. The final episode of "The Thornbirds," a mini-series starring Richard Chamberlain that aired in Britain in 1984, is a close second at 2,600 megawatts. But the latest incarnation of "Doctor Who," the science fiction series that has been running for decades, created only a 400-megawatt surge, roughly the equivalent of 160,000 electric kettles. While sports events, especially late World Cup games with England playing, can still cause a surge, the 2,290-megawatt surge that followed the 2002 "who shot Phil Mitchell" episode of the popular prime-time soap opera "East Enders" appears likely to be the last caused by a dramatic TV episode.

PORQUE SOLO LA MITAD??

Porn Star's Bottom Half Replica Stolen
FULLERTON, Calif. (UPI) -- Police in California are on the lookout for a $250 replica of the bottom half of porn star Jenna Jameson's body that was stolen from an adult store. Security video taken April 15 shows a man running off with the replica after breaking into the Erogenous Zone in Fullerton, Calif., The Orange County (Calif.) Register reported. The man reportedly first tried to break the glass of the front door, but had no luck, so he opted to smash the front window instead. The robber decided to take the half Jameson body replica, apparently after realizing he couldn't get the cash register open, the newspaper said. Copyright 2008 by United Press International

ROBO DE UN REMOLQUE CON 20 TONNELAS DE CHOCOLATE

Trailer with 20 tons of Chocolate Stolen
MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (UPI) -- Police said a semi-trailer containing more than 20 tons of Hershey's chocolate candy has been stolen from a Michigan City, Ind., truck stop. LaPorte County Police Chief of Detectives John Boyd said the thieves likely did not know what the trailer contained, as it was only labeled with the trucking company's name and the amount of stolen chocolate may be too large to be practical for black market sales. Truck driver Daryl Rey, 58, said he left the trailer Saturday at the Gas City truck stop on U.S. 421 and he returned the next day to find the 53-foot-long trailer, which contained 41,000 pounds of chocolate treats, had been stolen. He said the hidden satellite tracking device had been removed from the trailer, leading him to theorize professional thieves may have taken the load. Copyright 2008 by United Press International

Some women using the bus service reportedly said it made their daily trips more enjoyable, CNN reported. A woman said the bus service was, "excellent -- more comfortable too because it doesn't make as many stops and we go super well."

COLECCION DE ANIMALES DE PELUCHE POR ESCUELA

Students Aim to Set Stuffed Animal Record
ANDOVER, Mass. (UPI) -- A Massachusetts elementary school is hoping to set a Guinness World Record after collecting at least 5,600 stuffed animals for charity, a newspaper reported. Mounds of stuffed animals crowded the gymnasium of the Shawsheen School in Andover during a Monday assembly when students were informed of their accomplishment, The Boston Globe reported. "The kids were honestly wild, they were just so excited," Principal Moira O'Brien said. "It was really nice, mostly to remember why they did it." The school has held a stuffed animal charity collection the past 12 years, linking Phillips Academy and Andover High School tutors with Lawrence middle school students, the Globe reported. Some of the plush animals will be awarded to Lawrence students and the remainder will go to kids in orphanages, medical centers and libraries in Belize. The school reportedly has yet to hear if their Guinness World Record claim has been accepted. Copyright 2008 by United Press International

UN VERRACO ATACA A UN ALEMAN

Wild Boar attacks German Man
BERLIN (UPI) -- An elderly Berlin man said he was attacked by a wild boar that was apparently attempting to protect its piglets from his dog. Nikolaus Basedow, 69, said he was taking his Doberman-German Shepherd mix, Tobi, for a walk Tuesday when he came across two wild boars, one of which was accompanied by young piglets, Der Spiegel reported. "Tobi was surprised and barked," Basedow said. "Then it all happened very quickly." He told Der Spiegel the dog's barking spooked the sows and the one walking with her offspring rushed to protect them by charging in the direction of the aggressive sound. "The huge sow -- she was a real monster -- slammed into me, right in the middle of the pavement, and tore my calf open from bottom to top with its teeth," Basedow said. He said the boar left an 8-inch gash in his leg, Der Spiegel reported. A neighbor administered first aid and Basedow was taken to a hospital for treatment. MUJER MUERDE PIT BULL PARA PROTEGER UN LABRADOR

MINNEAPOLIS (UPI) -- A Minneapolis woman said she bit a pit bull on the nose to get the dog to release the grip it had on the throat of her Labrador retriever. Amy Rice said she tried to pry the jaws of the female pit bull apart to free her dog, Ella, but she was forced to resort to more drastic measures when the large dog refused to relent, the Star-Tribune newspaper in Minneapolis reported. "I ended up biting the pit bull on the nose," she said. "I didn't plan it, that's what happened. I broke the skin and had pit bull blood in my mouth. I knew what happened and I knew that it wasn't good." Rice said Ella has been afraid to go for walks since the confrontation. She said the Labrador was given several staples and stitches to her head and suffers from a crushed ear canal as a result of the attack, the newspaper said. The pit bull has been quarantined by Minneapolis Animal Control to determine whether the animal has rabies.

HABLAR A VOZ ALTA EN PUBLICO NO LE AGRADA A TODOS

Commuter Nag Acquitted of Train Assault
NEW YORK (UPI) -- A lawyer who objected to a teenager talking on his cell phone on a New York train was cleared of harassment and assault charges Tuesday. Manhattan Judge Larry Stephen acquitted John Clifford, ruling he did not have any criminal intent in a dispute on the Long Island Railroad in March 2007, Newsday reported. Witnesses during the trial described Clifford as a self-appointed behavior monitor. Donna DeCurtis, who said she was "petrified" of Clifford, described a 2006 altercation when he ordered her to talk less loudly. Prosecutor Mary Weisgerber compared him to "a dog marking his territory." Clifford, a former police officer who represented himself, said he only wanted "to get to work as peacefully as possible." The incident that led to the court case began when Clifford complained that Nicholas Bender, 19, was talking too loudly on his cell phone. Weisgerber said Bender had just learned a cousin had kidney failure. A woman who offered Bender her business card said Clifford tried to grab it and struck her on the hand.

PAVOS ATACAN

Turkeys terrorize Wis. mail carriers
MADISON, Wis. (UPI) -- A post office manager in Madison, Wis., says delivery workers are being terrorized by wild turkeys in a West Side neighborhood. Mara Wilhite, manager of the Hilldale Station Post Office, said between five and 10 large male turkeys have been pecking at postal carriers and occasionally attacking them with the spurs on their legs in the Parkwood Hills neighborhood, the Wisconsin State Journal (Madison) reported Tuesday. Wilhite said one turkey barged into a mail truck's open door and scratched the surprised driver. Eric Lobner, regional wildlife program supervisor for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, said the turkeys' aggression is likely tied to the mating season, which started recently and lasts until mid-May. He said the red, white and blue coloring on the mail trucks could be raising the ire of the birds, whose heads change color between blue, white and red during the mating season. Guard Fired for Stopping Teen Booze Theft
LAKE GENEVA, Wis. (UPI) -- A retired police officer said he was fired from a security guard position at a Lake Geneva, Wis., Target after he stopped a teenager from stealing booze. Dean Babcock said he spotted a 16-year-old girl attempting to steal a $45 bottle of Patron tequila March 7 and recognized her as the same teenage girl who was caught on a security camera taking a bottle of Captain Morgan rum only days earlier, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported Monday. Babcock said he knew he was not supposed to approach the girl, as only certain security personnel are authorized to stop shoplifters, but none of the authorized guards were on duty that day and he was concerned for the girl's health and safety. Babcock said he attempted to handle the situation "low-key" by merely contacting the girl's father instead of the police. However, he said, despite the father's gratitude, he was fired four days later "for violating the policy" regarding when shoplifters can be stopped. "They fired me for stopping a 16-year-old girl from stealing alcohol," he said. Kristin Grieser, an assistant store manager for the Lake Geneva Target, confirmed Dean's termination, but said she could not give any details. "We take shoplifting very seriously," she said, "but we are also very cautious in making apprehensions."

UN ASESINO HABLO DE SU ESCAPE.

Police: Murderer bragged about escape
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (UPI) -- Police in Bakersfield, Calif., say a convicted murderer who escaped from prison was caught after publicly bragging about being on "America's Most Wanted." Malcolm Kysor, 53, who escaped from the State Correctional Institution Albion in Pennsylvania by hiding among food scraps in an oversized trash can Nov. 25, was heard by a passerby Saturday while talking to people in downtown Bakersfield's Saunders Park, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Monday. The passerby heard Kysor say he was a wanted fugitive from Pennsylvania and mentioned he was featured on a segment of Fox's "America's Most Wanted." The unidentified person relayed the information to on-call firefighters at a nearby fire house and officials there phoned police. Officers said they questioned a man fitting the description given by the passerby and he gave them a name that was known to be an alias used by Kysor. He was arrested without incident. Kysor, who prior to his escape was serving a life sentence for beating a man to death with a golf club in 1981, has been charged with escape and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. He was being held at California's Kern County Jail. Copyright 2008 by United Press International

Woman smuggled snake out of store in pants
LANSING, Mich. (UPI) -- A clerk at Preuss Animal House in Lansing, Mich., said a woman stole a boa constrictor by hiding the snake inside her pants but quickly returned the reptile. The clerk said the woman grabbed the boa while his back was turned and shoved it down her pants before quickly exiting the store, WDIV-TV, Lansing, Mich., reported Monday. A surveillance camera recorded the woman reaching into the snake tank and walking away. Rick Preuss, the store's owner, said employees were concerned about the health of the baby snake before the woman brought it back to the shop. "She brought it back right away and ran out the door before I could even get hold of any law enforcement," Preuss said. He said the store is not seeking to press any charges. Illinois Politicos: Phoning and Walking don't mix
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (UPI) -- Some Illinois politicians say walking, talking, texting and crossing don't mix and want to ban cell phone use while getting to the other side of the street. State Rep. Ken Dunkin has introduced a bill that would make it a petty offense, punishable by a fine of up to $25, for crossing any street in the state while using a cell phone. The measure is in committee. While Dunkin has been criticized in some quarters for pushing the legislation, WMAQ-TV in Chicago says he has the support of Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, who told WBBM he wants a ban on texting or talking while on the street. White, however, favors the ban only in larger cities, the TV station said. White also wants statewide restrictions on drivers using cell phones. Currently, Chicago is the only Illinois city that limits cell phone use by drivers, requiring they use only hands-free devices, WMAQ-TV said.

VACAS CERRAN CALLE

Loose Cows close Scotland Road
GLASGOW, Scotland (UPI) -- Escaped cows from a crashed cattle truck wandered onto one of the busiest roads in Scotland, causing officials to close it for a time Wednesday morning. Police closed M73 after a small group of the cows, which were thought to have all been recovered after Tuesday night's crash, wandered back to the road and into traffic at about 4:20 a.m., The Scotsman reported Wednesday. Strathclyde Police said the road was reopened at about 8:30 a.m. after the three animals on the road were killed. One was hit by a truck and two others were shot by police. Railway service was affected for about a half hour Wednesday morning after one of the cows walked onto the tracks and was struck by a train. First Scotrail said four trains on the Glasgow to Whifflet route had to be canceled Wednesday but the service was running normally by 7:25 a.m. Copyright 2008 by United Press International

MUJER PRETENDE QUE ESTA EMBARAZADA PARA DINERO

Woman Fakes Pregnancy for Money
OCALA, Fla. (UPI) -- A Florida woman faces criminal charges after she allegedly faked a pregnancy to swindle thousands of dollars from agencies that support pregnant females. Shawanda Butler, 24, was accused of faking her pregnancy after she refused to show her belly to Little Angels Adoption Agency owner, Shannon McCracken, the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported Wednesday. Butler was taken into custody Tuesday and faces organized fraud charges. "I touched it. It was a pillow," McCracken said. McCracken reportedly became suspicious of Butler after she maintained her small 115-pound frame while claiming to be six months into her pregnancy. Butler has received at least $5,000 of support from Little Angels and $1,500 from the non-profit Choose Life Resources organization, the Sentinel reported. McCracken said she believes Butler used her pregnant sister's urine to get a positive result on a pregnancy test required by the agencies from women seeking financial support. Authorities have concluded that Butler falsified the pregnancy, police spokeswoman Jenifer Fisher said.

WACKY BRAS AUCTIONED FOR CHARITY

GLENDALE , Calif. (UPI) -- "Twin Peaks Bra" and "The Great Bra of China" were featured creations at this year's Soroptimist "Bras for a Cause" fundraiser in Glendale, Calif. The main component of the charity event was the auctioning off of wacky and creatively designed bras with original names and themes. "Yosemit-D Bra" and "Snorkeling in Bra-zil Bra" are two other examples. Soroptimist, a global volunteer organization for career women who "work to improve the lives of women and girls," donated the auction proceeds to breast cancer healing and research, the Los Angeles Daily News reported. One of the most attention-grabbing designs last Saturday reportedly was the "Op-Bra," constructed by a hair dresser named Joe DiMaggio, who is, in fact related, to the famous baseball star. It was a super-sized black bra containing large, old-fashioned globes in its cups. The yearly event, which began in 2003, is the brainchild of Soroptimist President Kathy Lefkovits, the newspaper said.

Easter Bunny Accused of Injuring Baby
AUSTIN, Texas (UPI) -- A Texas man working as the Easter Bunny at an Austin mall allegedly injured a baby after getting frustrated with the job, police said. People who saw the incident said the Bunny was posing for photos when he lost his temper with a photographer and moved a 9-month-old from his lap to the floor, said Sgt. Brian Loyd of the Austin police child abuse unit. The man has not been charged. "He went to take the child off his lap, and the child ended up injured in the process," Loyd said of the Friday incident. The child was treated and released at a local hospital. Loyd told the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman that police have received numerous conflicting stories from witnesses. "I've heard that he pushed the child down, dropped the child, tripped with the child. We don't want to charge someone without all the facts," Loyd said. The suspect reportedly has been released from Williamson County Jail as his investigation continues. He could face up to 20 years in jail if charged and convicted.
