GANARON $180 MILLONES EN EL JACKPOT!!!

Minn. Couple Claim $180M Jackpot
WASECA, Minn. (UPI) -- A Minnesota couple who won a $180 million Powerball jackpot still sounded stunned days after learning of their good fortune.

"It's bigger than you can grasp," Sue Rosenau of Waseca said at a news conference at Minnesota lottery headquarters in Roseville Tuesday. Her husband Paul called their beating the 146,107,962 to one odds in the Saturday night drawing "divine intervention," the Star Tribune reported Wednesday. "This happened for a reason," he said.

The 54-year-old couple, married for 22 years with three grown children, are taking their winnings in one lump sum of $88 million -- $59.6 million after taxes, the Minneapolis newspaper said. Still, they said, they plan to keep on working their regular jobs -- his operating heavy equipment and hers as a project and communications assistant.

Part of the money will likely go to research for a cure for Krabbe disease, a genetic affliction that claimed the life of their first granddaughter, they said.

Dale Deraad, a close friend and accountant, called them "very wonderful people" who "are going to do great things."

WEDDING PLANNER IS ILLEGAL ALIEN

'Wedding planner' gets Prison for Fraud
PAISLEY, Scotland (UPI) -- A Gambian man who appeared so often at Scottish registry offices he was nicknamed "the wedding planner" was ordered to prison Wednesday for immigration fraud.

Lamin Manneh received a two-year prison term, The Scotsman reports. But immigration officials say they will try to have him deported as soon as possible.

Manneh was arrested after investigators probing fake marriages began wondering why so many women from Paisley, a former industrial center outside Glasgow, were becoming involved with men from Nigeria, Gambia and Ghana. He allegedly was involved in 107 phony marriages.

Jonathan Manson, representing Manneh, said he actually played a minor role, transporting the men from England, where he lived, to Scotland for their wedding ceremonies at registry offices. But he became so familiar that he got his nickname.

In at least one case, Manneh also served as a witness, giving his own name.

While Manneh received 500 pounds ($1,000) per trip, he had to pay for transportation and housing out of that money, Manson said.

IN MARRIAGE, DOES AGE REALLY COUNT?

Age Gaps with Brides Grow as Grooms Age

STANFORD, Calif. (UPI) -- Stanford University researchers in California say wealth may have a smaller impact on older men marrying younger woman than previously thought.

The researchers said their study suggests the older an over-40 groom is, the more likely it is that his bride is significantly younger, the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News reported Wednesday.

The team said they were shocked to find the pattern unchanged by economic status.

"The poor guys marry down (in age) just as much as the rich guys do," said Paula England, a Stanford sociologist who co-authored the study. "That was kind of surprising to us."

England said brides of men in their 40s tended to be an average 7 years younger than their husbands, while women marrying men in their 50s were an average 11 years younger and brides of men in their 60s averaged 13 years younger than their beaus.

"We do find that money helps men's chances of getting married," England said. "But if we take youth as our crude measure of beauty, it doesn't seem like men are being able to exchange their money for younger women, so we don't know what's differentiating which older guys are able to marry very young women."

DID HE REALLY THINK HE WOULD GET AWAY WITH IT?

Man accused of bigamy after wives connect
CARY, N.C. (UPI) -- A North Carolina man who allegedly had two wives in towns about 15 miles apart is facing a bigamy charge after his double life caught up with him.

Dawn Stone-Wilkins, 32, who married Keron Wilkins, 30, of Clayton several months ago, told NBC17 in Raleigh she had begun to wonder why her husband would disappear for days at a time.

Then she got a late-night telephone call: "I said 'How did you get my number?' and she said 'Well I got it out of his phone.' I said, 'Excuse me?' She said, 'Well he's in the other room in our bed asleep, and I'm in our daughter's room.' I said, 'Excuse me?' She said, 'And I'm Keron's wife.' And I said, 'Well how are you Keron's wife when I'm Keron's wife?'"

Stone-Wilkins said she and Keron lived in Cary, a town about 10 miles outside Raleigh and 15 miles from Clayton. Chaka Wilkins has been married to Keron for eight years and have two children, ages 4 and 8 months, the TV station reported.

According to an arrest warrant filed Tuesday in Wake County Magistrate Court, Keron Wilkins is charged with one felony count of bigamy.

SAYING NO TO PLASTIC BAGS

LOS ANGLES (AFP) - The city of Los Angeles announced it will ban all plastic bags from retail stores as of July 1, 2010, following similar anti-pollution regulations already enforced in San Francisco.
The second-largest US city behind New York, Los Angeles, with its four million population, will ban plastic bagging in all supermarkets, grocery and retail stores, the Los Angeles City Council said in its new regulation.
After July 1, 2010, all store customers must provide their own bags or purchase bags made of paper or other biogradable material from the store for 25 cents (0.25 dollar), it added.
The goal is to rid the city of some 2.3 billion non-biodegradable plastic bags that are distributed each year and end up polluting waste dumps for a long time.
San Francisco, 600 kilometers (373 miles) north of here, also in California, in 2007 became the first US city to ban plastic bags from its stores.
Both city regulations are intended to pressure state lawmakers who are considering a bill to eliminate plastic bags across the state by 2012.
Several countries around the world have already adopted laws banning plastic bags, which often end up killing animals that swallow or get caught up in them.

DOCTORES Y EL RACISMO

Doctors may have subconscious racial bias
SEATTLE (UPI) -- A sophisticated cognitive test suggests that U.S. physicians -- like society at large -- have subconscious racial attitudes and stereotypes, researchers say. The study, published in the journal Medical Care, suggests that pediatricians have less "implicit race bias" than physicians in other specialties and the general public and that there was no relationship between subconscious bias and quality of care. "Further research is needed to explore whether physician implicit attitudes and stereotypes about race predict quality of care," Janice A. Sabin and colleagues of University of Washington said in a statement. Ninety-five pediatricians took an Internet survey called the Race Attitude Implicit Association that measures subconscious attitudes and stereotypes based on how quickly the user makes connections between race and certain "good" versus "bad" concepts. Previous research in more than 1 million Internet users suggest that most people have some degree of "implicit preference" for whites relative to blacks -- despite a lack of conscious, or explicit, bias or prejudice. The pediatricians expressed an explicit attitude in favor of African-Americans, however, in addition to their implicit preference for whites, they held a subconscious bias that white patients would be more compliant with medical treatment, the researchers said.

LOS ROBOTS HAN LLEGAN A LA VECINIDAD

Robot patrols Atlanta neighborhood
ATLANTA (UPI) -- A downtown Atlanta bar owner has constructed a remote-controlled robot to patrol the neighborhood around his business late at night. Rufus Terrill, proprietor of O'Terrills bar, built the machine out of an old meat smoker, a three-wheeled scooter, an infrared camera, a water cannon and a loudspeaker, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Terrill said he got the idea for the remote-controlled vigilante after he became fed up with the drug dealers, thieves and vandals that he said frequent his neighborhood. He said he sends his robot to patrol the area surrounding a nearby daycare center, and uses the attached loudspeaker to address loiterers. "I tell them they are trespassing, it's private property, and they have to leave," he said. "They throw bottles and cans at it. That's when I shoot the water cannon. They just scatter like roaches." He said the water cannon is set to low pressure so as not to cause injury to those in its path. Police spokeswoman Lisa Keyes said the robot has not yet been the subject of any complaints, but she warned that Terrill could be charged with assault if he intentionally sprays someone with the machine's water cannon.

SOLO POR DINERO

Police: Faux 'Elvis' faked fire for cash
TAMPA, Fla. (UPI) -- A Tampa, Fla., Elvis impersonator could be singing "Jailhouse Rock" in an actual jailhouse for allegedly collecting donations after a fire that never occurred. Kathy Prince and Shelby Ewbank, whose husband is also an Elvis tribute artist, said they organized a benefit for Elvis impersonator Frederick Denmark that yielded him more than $2,000, plus clothing and household items, after he told them he was all shook up from a fire that destroyed his home, the Tampa (Fla.) Tribune reported Wednesday. The women reported Denmark to Tampa police, who charged the faux-King with felony organized fraud and felony grand theft. Police said Denmark told them he invented the fire story to get the money. "He said he made a bad decision and wants to pay it back if he can," Detective Curtis Smith said. "He even cried." Denmark is currently free on $4,000 bail, jail records say.

REGRESARON SU PERRO DE CERAMICA CON DOS PERRITOS Y UN ALBUM DE SU VIAJES

Lawn decoration returned, with photos
PORTLAND, Ore. (UPI) -- A Portland, Ore., woman who had given up hope of ever seeing her missing ceramic dog again said the item has returned -- with photos of its travels. Edwina Cramer-Norris said she had assumed the dog was gone for good when it disappeared last month, but then she began receiving postcards addressed "To Master" from "Lucky Dog," KPTV, Portland, Ore., reported Monday. Cramer-Norris said she saw a blue van leave her driveway Sunday and when she went outside to investigate, she found her missing lawn decoration sitting in a makeshift dog house alongside a photo album documenting its adventures. She said the pictures depict the dog with a family at locations including DisneyWorld, Graceland, the Mississippi River and New Orleans. She said a note accompanying the pictures explained that the dog had needed a vacation from Oregon because the weather was too rainy. "It's a strange thing," she said. "We're happy to have him back and it gives us something to share with others. (It's) some kind of a strange story." Cramer-Norris said the missing dog returned with two new additions to the family -- a pair of ceramic puppies.

EL LADRON REGRESO PARA SU BILLETERA YASI SE SUPO QUE FUE UN ROBO EN LA CASA

Burglar returns to bargain for wallet
NEW YORK (UPI) -- A New York man whose home was burgled said the perpetrator was foiled when he returned to the scene of the crime to ask for his wallet back. Yaakov Kanelsky, 49, said the man who showed up at his door and said he had left his wallet inside claimed to have snuck into the apartment to use the bathroom, but the excuse seemed weak and the suspect eventually admitted to taking $200 from Kanelsky's bedroom, the New York Post reported Monday. "I didn't even know any money was missing," Kanelsky said. When he checked his bedroom he found the cash was indeed gone. Kanelsky told the man to return the money first and police arrived as the suspect, identified as Victor Marin, 20, was sliding the bills through the door one by one. Marin was charged with burglary, petty larceny and possession of stolen property.

EN LA PISCINA???

Family Surprised When Bull Comes for Dip
ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (UPI) -- A St. Andrews, Scotland, family said a planned party for their new pool was canceled after a large bull came barreling down a hill and plunged into the water. Jamie Stewart said the party was canceled after the unexpected visitor took a dive into the 10 gallons of water that had just been placed inside, The Telegraph reported Monday. "It was definitely an 8.5 out of 10 dive," Stewart said. "I couldn't believe it. It's not everyday you see a bull in your pool. The kids had been looking forward to trying out the new pool but they quickly saw the funny side." He said firefighters pumped all of the water out of the pool before shooting the bull with tranquilizers. "The vet had to shoot it twice with a dart gun before it conked out," Stewart said. "They then managed to get straps underneath the animal and it was lifted out by a digger with a front lift. "The solar covering on the pool has taken a bit if a battering and the bottom is a bit scraped but otherwise it appears to be OK. At the end of the day it was a pretty funny incident although not one that we would want to repeat," he said.

UN VOTO POR LOS EXTRA TERRESTIALES

Space Alien Advocate Descends on DNC
DENVER (UPI) -- A Denver man who wants a wing of the government to study space aliens said he plans to hold a news conference during the Democratic National Convention. Jeff Peckman said his proposal for the creation of an Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission will be the centerpiece of his news conference on extraterrestrials and the "technologies that they appear willing to offer," The Rocky Mountain News reported. He said the conference was timed to coincide with the Democratic National Convention -- where Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., is likely to be formally nominated as the party's candidate for president -- to take advantage of the media exposure. "Having so many foreign media here I think will be a good lesson for the American media about how seriously this subject can be treated and how serious of a subject it is," he said.

SI ERES MUJER NO PODRAS VIAJAR!!!

Will Malaysia restrict women's travel?
KUALA KLAWANG, Malaysia (UPI) -- Malaysian women who want to travel abroad on their own would need letters from employers or parents under a Foreign Ministry proposal. The letter would give the purpose of the trip, The New Straits Times reported. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Rais Yatim said the aim is to protect women who might be vulnerable to recruitment as drug mules. The newspaper said 119 Malaysians, mostly women in their 20s, are imprisoned in Asia, Europe and South America, for drug crimes. Rais said many of the women working as drug couriers claim to be traveling for study or to attend conferences. "With this declaration, we will know for sure where and for what she is traveling overseas," he said. But women's groups reacted angrily to the plan. Faridah Khalid of the National Council of Women's Organizations Malaysia called it "an infringement on our rights." "We're the victims and now you're creating more problems," she said. "Why must you put more restrictions on women?" Drug trafficking groups have turned to Malaysia for couriers because citizens can travel widely without visas.

SE LES PIDE A LOS TRABAJADORES QUE TRABAJEN UN DIA SIN ROPA!!

TV's 'Naked Office' asks workers to strip
LONDON (UPI) -- The producers of the new British reality show "Naked Office" say they are hunting for companies willing to have their employees shed their clothes. Producers said the show, set for broadcast on BBC3, will first interview office employees to establish their thoughts on the subject of nudity. Then, over the course of several weeks, some will be asked to participate in life-drawing classes to help them become accustomed to public nakedness, The Sun reported Tuesday. The show will climax with employees being asked to participate in a "Naked Friday" event at the office. The producers said in a letter inviting companies to participate that the nude work day would be a "very productive day as well as a day to remember." The purpose of the program is to analyze attitudes toward nudity, body image and the role of clothing in office hierarchy, the producers said.

ES CULPA DE LOS TRABAJADORES

Because these two little deorative turtles are ornage doesn't mean we should paint real turtles that colour.!

Orange turtle blamed on workers
NEW YORK (UPI) -- Residents of a New York neighborhood say a box turtle that has long roamed through their yards was painted orange by construction workers. Neighbors in the Williamsburg neighborhood of New York's Brooklyn borough said the turtle, named Myrtle, was found spray-painted orange in a backyard adjacent to a development, New York Newsday reported Tuesday. Residents blamed the painting on construction workers at the development. Meredith Chesney, a resident of the building next to the development, said the turtle is believed to have wandered into the construction site through a hole in the fence. She and others said the painting of the turtle was only the latest in a string of problems springing from the development. "It's like Williamsburg has ever been full of natural beauty, but eventually you're able to see beauty in the ugliness," said Judy McGuire, a 12-year resident of the neighborhood. "But we have these little tiny bits of nature and beauty that just keep on being run over and destroyed and hurt. It's really disheartening."

SUSPICIOUS FERRY RIDERS ID'S AS TOURISTS

SEATTLE (UPI) -- After a long hunt for two men who allegedly acted in a suspicious manner on a ferry in Washington state, the FBI has declared them curious sightseers. The men, described only as European business consultants who live in a country in the European Union, came to a U.S. embassy and showed proof of identification, information about why they were in Seattle last summer and the snapshots they took on the ferry to show friends and relatives, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported. Ferry employees photographed the men last July because they seemed to be taking a close interest in the workings of the ferry. The FBI released those photos to the news media in August, although some newspapers chose not to publish them. Laura Laughlin, special agent in charge of the FBI in Seattle, said Monday that the case had an "excellent outcome." She said investigators hoped when they released the photos that someone would recognize the pair or they would come forward and could be ruled either in or out.

BURGLARY SUSPECT STUCK IN RESTAURANT VENT

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (UPI) -- The owner of a Florida restaurant says a suspected burglar became trapped in an air vent and nearly fell into hot oil. Rana Escamilla, owner of the Mandarin restaurant in Jacksonville, said manager Richard Angers called him to the eatery after he spotted a man's foot hanging out of a grill vent, WKMG-TV in Orlando, Fla., reported Tuesday. "He was coming down right (over the grill)," Escamilla said. "He would have skittled right onto the grill and into the oil. So, basically, we saved his life by calling the police to get him out. "He was in pain. He was hurting and he was trapped. That's a really small opening." Jacksonville police said the suspect, identified as Jason Hammond, was attempting to use the grill vent to get into a nearby pharmacy in the complex. Hammond, who was charged with burglary, told police he fell into the vent after having an argument with his wife.

RICKROLL PRANK COMES TO BALTIMORE

BALTIMORE (UPI) -- Almost 50 people sang the lyrics of British pop star Rick Astley in Baltimore during the weekend as part of a "rickroll" prank, fans say. Fans either sing or redirect Internet browsers to recognize Astley's 1980s hit song, "Never Gonna Give You Up." The Baltimore Sun said Sunday. "I'm in love with this song," said Ryan Goff, who organized the "rickroll" event Saturday at the city's Inner Harbor. "I thought I'd be absolutely sick of it, but I like it more. I'm working on singing it backward." Traditionally a "rickroll" takes place online when unsuspecting browsers click on a serious-sounding link only to watch a video of Astley singing his hit. For Goff, and others like him, the online bit was not enough. Soon Astley fans were taking to the streets to share their love of the pop star with strangers, the Sun reported. "It's grass roots; you've got to make the best of it," Goff said. "It's all in the spirit of Rick." Copyright 2008 by United Press International

MEDITATION IS THE BEST MEDICINE IN THE WORLD. FOR MY 101 ENTRY FOR THIS BLOG - ENJOY!!

WHAT IS MEDIATION AND HOW DO YOU BEGIN IT?

If you really want to get to know the truth, that means meditate or understand meditation, you must first leave the mind to one side, leave religion, and leave your Saints and Gods in peace Neither the Koran nor the Bible, nor the Torah or any "sacred writing" can help. Deeds do not serve any purpose. Nor will going to the Himalayas. Only one thing can help you: start looking at things without the mind. When you look at a flower, do not let the mind say anything. Only look at it. It will be difficult because of your old habit of interpreting. You are always interpreting, and interpretations always differ. Interpretations depend on the mind. How you see things depends on you, not things. Unless you reach a point where these thoughts leave the mind and you stop trying to interpret things and becomes direct, your mind cannot be the mediator. You distort things, and mix them up with interpretations. They are not pure. So the only way to reach the truth is to learn how your vision can be immediate. You must learn how to abandon the aid of the mind ... This mind management is the problem, because the mind can only create dreams, and you can create wonderful dreams that can make you very emotional. And through that emotion the dream begins to resemble reality. If you emotions too much, you're intoxicated, you're no longer in your senses, then what you see is a projection of yourself. And there are so many worlds and minds, because every mind lives in their own world. You can laugh at the stupidity of others, but until we start laughing at our own, we are not able to become a natural being, a man of truth. So what should you do? Try small things: do not intervene on the mind about them. When you look at a flower, just look. Do not say: 'What beautiful! How horrible! ". Do not say anything! Do not use words. Do not verbalize. Just look. The mind will feel uncomfortable, uneasy. The mind would like to say something. Simply tell the mind: 'Be silence! Let me see. I need only to look." Initially it will be difficult, but it starts with things in which you're not very involved. It will be difficult to watch your wife without words. You are heavily involved, too emotionally attached. Whether in anger or love, either way you are too involved. Watch things that are neutral: a rock, a flower, a tree, the sunrise, a bird flying, a cloud floating in the sky. Watch only the things you're not very involved with, which can remain disconnected from you, which can remain indifferent. Start with neutral things, and only when you have managed those move into emotionally charged situations. People begin with loaded situations, and fail, because it is almost impossible. For your wife, you love or hate her. There is no middle ground. If you love you're crazy and if you hate you're crazy; will both emotions you have the words. It is almost impossible not to let both emotions come. It is very difficult due to the constant practice of speaking. Sleeping or awake when you are emotionally involved is very difficult to leave the mind to one side. The mind intervene. So, first observe situations that are not loaded. When you feel that you can look at certain things without the mind interfering, then try it with emotionally charged situations. Little by little, one becomes efficient. It's like swimming. At first you are afraid, you think that you will not survive. And you have been working for so long with the mind that you can not believe you can exist without it even for a single moment. But try! You will be starting the path to meditation in everyday life. Osho

Dunkin' Donuts worker busted for potty cam
KINGS PARK, N.Y. (UPI) -- An ex-New York Dunkin' Donuts worker was arrested for allegedly hiding a camera in the women's restroom and viewing the footage on his computer, police said. Danish Qureshi, 25, of Huntington Station, N.Y., is accused of hiding a small camera in a phony smoke detector looking over the women's bathroom at Dunkin' Donuts, Newsday reported Monday. "This is one aberrant act committed by a store employee using poor judgment," a Dunkin' Donuts statement said. Police said a man who had similar equipment reported Qureshi's plan when he accidentally picked up footage of the bathroom on his home system. It is reported Qureshi is facing charges of second-degree unlawful surveillance, which is a Class E felony. He was let out of police custody on $7,500 bail Sunday after being arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip, N.Y., the report said.

VICTIM NOW OWNS HOUSE SHE WAS A CAPTIVE IN

VIENNA, Austria (AP) -- The lawyer for former Austrian kidnap victim Natascha Kampusch says the young woman now owns the house where she was held captive for more than eight years.
Lawyer Gerald Ganzger says Kampusch became the owner of the house and yard in the quiet Vienna suburb of Strasshof earlier this year. She is not thought to live there.
Ganzger said Friday Kampusch received two-thirds of the property as compensation and reached agreement with her captor's mother for the remaining third. He declined to provide more details.
Kampusch was 10 when Wolfgang Priklopil abducted her on her way to school. He held the girl for the next eight and a half years, mainly in a dingy dungeon under his home. Kampusch escaped in August 2006, and Priklopil killed himself hours later.

HOMBRE DE LA LEY DESNUDO?

Judge Rules for Former Naked Prosecutor
HAMILTON, Ohio (UPI) -- A Hamilton, Ohio, judge has ruled the city's rationale for firing an assistant city prosecutor who was caught walking around naked was incorrect. Scott Blauvelt, 36, was videotaped by security cameras walking around the Government Services Center naked on two occasions and was charged with two counts of public indecency in September 2006, the Hamilton (Ohio) Journal-News reported. Even though the charges were dismissed on a technicality, Blauvelt was fired by the city, which cited his status as an unclassified employee. However, Judge Thomas Nurre ruled that the city's charter classifies Blauvelt's former job as a classified civil service position. Michael Gmoser, a lawyer for Blauvelt, said the ruling allows his client to have a Hamilton Civil Service Commission hearing into whether his firing was appropriate. The city has 30 days to appeal Nurre's decision.

Police: Teen Took Cop Car on Joyrides
DILLON, S.C. (UPI) -- Police in Dillon, S.C., said a 13-year-old boy and his mother have been arrested after the teen took a police patrol car for a joyride. Dillon police Sgt. Jason Turner said police were unaware that the car was missing Sunday until a resident called to report a young boy driving the vehicle, The (Pee Dee, S.C.) Morning News reported. The boy had learned the code to the door of the department by watching someone enter, and used the entrance to get the keys to the car, Dillon said. He said the boy had taken the car for a joyride the previous Sunday and had returned it to the police station before it was noticed missing. The boy's mother, Patricia Gillespie, was arrested and charged with two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor after she told police she had seen the boy driving the car on both occasions but did not notify police because she did not see anything wrong with the situation, Turner said. The 13-year-old, who was charged with two counts of grand larceny, apparently took the car to patrol the city because he was interested in law enforcement, Dillon said.

SE CALMO CON CERVEZA

Women Calm Attacker With Beer
LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- A 71-year-old Los Angeles woman said she was able to stop an attacker in her home from assaulting her daughter by offering him beer. Linda Dodson, 45, said a large man entered her room and attacked her at 3:37 a.m. Monday while her mother was sleeping in the next room, KTLA-TV, Los Angeles, reported. "He had his big hands ... on my throat, my mouth and my nose and I'm flopping ... when he released his hand for a second, I just let out this blood-scorching scream," Dodson said. Dodson's mother said she came into her daughter's room to investigate the scream and jumped onto the attacker's back. However, she said she decided to switch tactics after the attacker threw her against a wall and grabbed her face so hard the lenses popped out of her glasses. "I just looked at him because I could tell he had been drinking and I said, 'I don't know about you, but I could use a beer, how about you?'" she said. "And he said yes." The mother and daughter took the suspect into their living room and gave him a beer, which seemed to calm him. Linda Dodson said she phoned 911 after excusing herself to go to the bathroom and police arrived soon after. Louie Herrera, a convicted child molester, was arrested on suspicion of residential burglary, false imprisonment, and resisting arrest.

POLICIAS O NO?

Crosswalks newest undercover police beat
CHICAGO (UPI) -- The upcoming use of undercover police officers at Chicago crosswalks may not be "Serpico," but is a safety necessity, police officials say. While the undercover efforts pale in comparison to those in the 1973 police corruption movie, Chicago Police Department Traffic Department Cmdr. Robert Evans said the newest police focus is meant to ensure the safety of pedestrians, the Chicago Tribune reported. The police official said officers will pose as civilians and issue warning citations to those drivers who do not give pedestrians the right of way at crosswalks. Evans said the undercover assignments may not be full of adventure but that does not mean there is no risk involved. "We are not going to put officers in jeopardy to make a point," Evans explained. "But any day you put on a police uniform, or put on plainclothes, you are taking risks." Chicago area resident Gary Hackley suggested the fault may actually lay with pedestrians. "Chicagoans routinely wander across the middle of streets, engrossed in cell phone calls or sipping their coffee, and leave it to drivers to keep them safe," he told the Tribune. NEW OUTHOUSE TOO HIGH CLASS FOR 79 YR OLD FARMER

New Outhouse Too Fancy For Farmer
CINCINNATI (UPI) -- A new outhouse built by a Cincinnati non-profit group is simply too fancy for Elbert "Lew" Preston, the Ohio farmer says. The 79-year-old retired tobacco farmer said the concrete and treated lumber outhouse built by People Working Cooperatively is a far cry from the simple wooden structure he once had sitting above a hole in the ground, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported. "It's too nice and complicated to be an outhouse," Preston said. "I call it a privy." The senior citizen said his old outhouse not only survived decades of usage, but even remained in service after being uprooted by a tornado in 1997. A visit by board of health officials resulted in the outhouse being condemned. That's when People Working Cooperatively offered to build a new structure for Preston. He says he misses his dilapidated outhouse but he's relieved he can still relieve himself outside. "When you're in a house, sounds carry," Preston told the Enquirer. "Everybody knows your business."

EN LA CHINA...

China: Mistresses help fight corruption
BEIJING (UPI) -- Chinese officials said tips given by mistresses of federal authorities are helping bring an end to rampant corruption. About 80 percent of federal authorities taken into police custody on corruption charges in the city of Dongguan in southern China, were busted because of information given by their mistresses, CNN reported Thursday. Zhou Yuefeng, deputy director of Dongguan's anti-graft bureau, said the women "gave us important information that we did not possess." A law adopted last year requires that federal authorities found guilty of having mistresses be fired from their positions, the report said. CNN reported that several Chinese officials have been busted in past years for stealing to take care of their mistresses. The officials taken into custody in Dongguan were accused of taking bribes, authorities said.

HELPING A PREGNANT MOOSE IS A PLUS!

Men Save Moose from Hole in Ice
AINES, Alaska (UPI) -- A group of six men in Haines, Alaska, said they roped and rescued a pregnant moose that had fallen into a hole in the ice covering the Chilkat River. Charlie DeWitt, who led the rescue operation, said the animal was attempting to smash its way out of the ice hole, but to no avail, the Anchorage (Alaska) Daily News reported. "(The Department of Fish and Game) didn't know what to do. I decided to take the bull by the horns. It was right out there in the middle of God and everybody," said DeWitt, who was joined at the scene by other motorists who had seen the moose or heard news of its plight. Bud Stewart, who supplied the rope, said he was able to calm the moose down and she allowed him to pet her snout and eventually slip the rope around her neck. The rope kept the moose afloat while the rescuers tied another rope to the animal's rear end. "We got to play cowboy," DeWitt said. "I've killed enough moose in my lifetime and I've eaten enough moose. I wanted to give it a chance to make it." DeWitt said the moose wandered off after taking a short rest following her rescue. "Hopefully, she's still alive," he said.

Mayor Wins Quarter-million in Lottery
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (UPI) -- The mayor of Lawrenceville, Ga., said he has won a quarter of a million dollars from the Mega Millions lottery. Rex Millsaps, 57, who works as an accountant in addition to his part-time mayoral duties, said his winnings will go toward his daughter's wedding and detailing his pickup truck, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Millsaps said he will give the remaining money to his children and grandchildren. The mayor said he checked the numbers from the drawing Saturday and called his wife to tell her he had matched the first five numbers of the winning combination. "She didn't believe me," he said. "I ended up taking it back to the store, and the computer said to go immediately to the lottery office." Millsaps, who said he plans to run for re-election in November, said his prize would have been $16 million if he had matched the Mega Ball number, 32. He said his ticket bore the number 34 in the Mega Ball category.

CUANDO ERES FANATICO, TODO ES POSIBLE

Free Funeral for Baseball Fan
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (UPI) -- A woman who won a free funeral at a Grand Prairie, Texas, minor league baseball game said she has survived numerous medical problems. Elaine Fulps, 60, bested other Grand Prairie Airhogs fans in a competition that included a pallbearer's race, a mummy wrap and a eulogy delivery at Tuesday's game, The Dallas Morning News reported. Fulps said she performed all of the feats while wearing a neck brace related to multiple medical problems that have led to about 20 surgeries. "I almost croaked many times," Fulps said. "God still has me around for a reason," she said. "To win a funeral." The $10,000 funeral, part of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball team's All Hogs Go to Heaven promotion, will be provided by the Chapel of Roses Funeral Home. Fulps said she plans to meet soon with funeral home officials to work out the details of her prize, which includes a free headstone and burial plot. "I'm going to pick a spot under a tree out of the Texas heat," she said. "And let's hope it's a pet-free cemetery. I don't want to get watered on."
