Illinois Politicos: Phoning and Walking don't mix
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (UPI) -- Some Illinois politicians say walking, talking, texting and crossing don't mix and want to ban cell phone use while getting to the other side of the street. State Rep. Ken Dunkin has introduced a bill that would make it a petty offense, punishable by a fine of up to $25, for crossing any street in the state while using a cell phone. The measure is in committee. While Dunkin has been criticized in some quarters for pushing the legislation, WMAQ-TV in Chicago says he has the support of Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, who told WBBM he wants a ban on texting or talking while on the street. White, however, favors the ban only in larger cities, the TV station said. White also wants statewide restrictions on drivers using cell phones. Currently, Chicago is the only Illinois city that limits cell phone use by drivers, requiring they use only hands-free devices, WMAQ-TV said.
