301 'large' cents sell for $10.5 million
LONG BEACH, Calif. (UPI) -- A total of $3.01 in rare pennies were auctioned off by Heritage Auction Galleries in Long Beach, Calif., for $10.7 million. Walter Husak's rare American penny collection consisted of 301 "large cents," or antique copper coins roughly the size of quarters, dated from 1793 to 1814, the Los Angeles Times reported. After investing years and millions into tracking down and acquiring the early American currency, Husak was a little sad to see his pennies sold, but excited about the outcome. "It was a stupendous auction," said Husak, 65. "I still can't even believe it." About 200 coin aficionados crammed into a meeting room at the Long Beach Convention center to participate in the auction, which saw a top price tag of $632,500 each for two 18th-century coins. The sale broke rare penny sales records.
