Deputy locked Overnight in Court Tunnel
MADISON, Wis. (UPI) -- A Dane County, Wis., sheriff's spokeswoman said a deputy was accidentally trapped overnight in an underground tunnel under a courthouse. Deputy Dave Hafeman entered the 8-foot-by-8-foot tunnel, which is used to transport prisoners between the Public Safety Building and the Dane County Courthouse, Friday afternoon after the guard who controls the heavy metal doors at both sides of the tunnel went home for the weekend, The (Madison, Wis.) Capitol Times reported Tuesday. "It's an area you get buzzed in and out of from a control area," sheriff's spokeswoman Elise Schaffer said. "I don't know his specific reason for going in there, but I believe it's near where they keep their weapons," Schaffer said. Hafeman was discovered after his wife phoned authorities to report that he had never arrived home from work. Detectives found his car in the Dane County Parking Ramp and he was found in the tunnel shortly thereafter. Schaffer said Hafeman was not injured during the ordeal.
